We are honored to welcome Josina Vink to Timelab!

Our nested global crises—including democratic breakdown, polarization, oppression, inequity, climate catastrophe, and biodiversity loss—reveal a fundamental failing in our current modes of relating. Many of our ways of relating have been shaped by assumptions of separation, such as the detachment of ourselves from others and the world around us. There is an urgent need to reimagine and reshape our relations in ways that acknowledge the fundamental interdependence of our existence.

Furthermore, dominant narratives of transformation to address these global crises, tend to reinforce either the need for large-scale systems change or individual action—both of which often leave people feeling stuck and negate the profound potentialities of intentional, local coexistence.

In response, drawing on relational perspectives from design, sociology, anthropology and organizational studies, this workshop will help participants gain a strong theoretical underpinning for the intentional adaptation of relations.

Participants will learn to unpack patterns of relating by initiating their own pattern library, through which they will explore the patterns enacted amid their local web of relations. In addition, participants will experiment with a practical process of shaping relations otherwise, based on a recognition of interdependence, an ethic of care, and quest for reciprocity. Acknowledging the entangled nature of agency and fractal quality of systems, this workshop opens up hopeful possibilities for remaking our worlds together through embodied, situated renegotiations.

About Josina Vink

Josina Vink (they/them) is a designer, researcher and teacher at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design in Norway. They have worked as a service and systemic designer in healthcare internationally, including at the Mayo Clinic in the United States, Center for Addiction and Mental Health in Canada and Experio Lab in Sweden. Josina’s research makes theoretical and practical contributions to shaping social structures, service system transformation, building reflexivity and relationality. They have published widely in leading service and design journals, including Design Issues, Design Studies, International Journal of Design, Journal of Service Research, and Journal of Service Management. In their personal life, Josina tinkers with shaping relations otherwise within their local community—at their dinner table, in the community garden, and on the basketball court.

Relaties anders vormgeven – met Josina Vink

Onze onderling verweven wereldcrises – van democratisch verval, polarisatie en onderdrukking tot klimaatcatastrofes en verlies aan biodiversiteit – leggen een fundamenteel spanningsveld bloot in hoe we ons tot elkaar en de wereld verhouden. Veel van onze relaties zijn gevormd vanuit het idee een vermoeden van gescheidenheid: tussen onszelf en anderen, tussen mensen en natuur. Wat als we onze relaties herdenken en hervormen op een manier die de onderlinge afhankelijkheid van al wat bestaat erkent.

Tegelijkertijd gaan veel heersende ideeën over maatschappelijke verandering uit van óf grootschalige systeemverandering, óf individuele actie. Beide benaderingen laten mensen vaak machteloos achter en negeren het potentieel van intentionele, lokale vormen van samenleven.

Wat kun je verwachten?

In deze workshop nodigen we je uit om vanuit relationele perspectieven (ontleend aan design, sociologie, antropologie en organisatiestudies) na te denken over hoe we onze relaties anders kunnen vormgeven.

Onder begeleiding van Josina Vink krijg je:

• Een sterk theoretisch kader om intentioneel aan relaties te werken

• De kans om je eigen ‘pattern library’ te beginnen: een persoonlijke verzameling relatiepatronen uit je lokale context

• Praktische handvatten om relaties vorm te geven vanuit de erkenning van de onderlinge afhankelijkheid, zorgethiek en zoektocht naar wederkerigheid

• Een uitnodiging om te experimenteren met hoe agency verweven is binnen systemen en hoe we van binnenuit veranderingen in gang kunnen zetten

Door het erkennen van de verbondenheid tussen zeggenschap en de fractale eigenschappen van systemen, brengt deze workshop ruimte voor hoop en verbeelding — waarin we samen oefenen in het hermaken van de wereld, vanuit het alledaagse, het relationele en het belichaamde.

Over Josina Vink

Josina Vink (they/them) is ontwerper, onderzoeker en docent aan de Oslo School of Architecture and Design (Noorwegen). Ze werkten internationaal als service- en systemisch ontwerper in de zorg, o.a. bij de Mayo Clinic (VS), het Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (Canada), en Experio Lab (Zweden).

Josina publiceerde in toonaangevende design- en wetenschappelijke tijdschriften zoals Design Issues, Design Studies, Journal of Service Research en International Journal of Design.

In hun dagelijks leven experimenteren ze met andere vormen van relaties in hun lokale gemeenschap — aan de keukentafel, in de buurttuin of op het basketbalveld.
